From the official brigade report of the time, quite a sad incident.

Wholesale furniture manufacturers and upholsterers, occupied the premises which had been mainly used as a warehouse for the previous 4 years. There were two partners in the business and 4 employees worked at the premises.

As the occupants were about to leave for home a fire was discovered on the 1st floor landing involving latex cushions. The alarm was raised and one of the proprietors got an extinguisher into use, couldn’t put out the fire so he left the premises.

Call made just after 17.00 to the fire brigade. Meanwhile it had been realised that one of the employees, a machinist Mrs Katherine McDonough of 13 Randall Drive, Netherton was missing, one of the proprietors who had a key went into no 95 and used the key to open a communicating door into no 97 but by then Mrs McDonough had jumped.

Witnesses had seen her appear at a 2nd floor window and put her leg out as if to jump, they called on her not to. She went back into the room but smoke was now beginning to issue from the window and she came back to the window and jumped. She was taken to hospital by a passing ambulance but died of her injuries. The brigade arrived a matter of a minute later.
